Sometimes brides and grooms will wonder if they should get photographs of the couple getting ready before the ceremony. If their budget allows, I often suggest they do. These actually tend to be some of my favorite photographs. The energy is high and emotions are flowing. During this time I try to stay inconspicuous and out of the way. I want people to feel free to be themselves and not constantly aware that they are being photographed.
Tips for Amazing “Getting Ready” Wedding Pictures
Have a great and beautiful environment to take pictures in. This is important if you are interested in getting the kinds of photographs you love. Sometimes the venue has its own quarters. If you have a choice try to choose a location that is warm and inviting with lots of natural light. If you are choosing between hotel rooms, try for Boutique hotels since they often provide a unique look.
Music. Music always connects with people in different ways and will loosen people up. It does not need to be load or prominent .. it can be quietly playing in the background. Have drinks readily available (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic). Having a glass of champagne with your bridesmaids (which in of itself provides for a great photo op) may relax you. Another important factor for setting the mood is Time. Allow yourself enough time getting ready so that you aren’t stressing out running around! Allowing enough time will also allow me to get photographs of such things as the dress, shoes, rings, etc..
Tidiness is often overlooked and can be challenging to maintain, but it can make a huge difference when it comes to the pictures taken while you are getting ready. Although documenting your day in a natural setting is great, there are things that really don’t look good in photos. Plastic water bottles, packaging materials, shoe boxes all over the place, paper towels and napkins, paper bags, plastic forks and knives can all make the scene look chaotic and can interfere with creating beautiful photos. One idea is to schedule housekeeping to come in to re-make the bed and tidy up the suite before I arrive. Probably more importantly and practical is ot have someone who is willing to be in charge of keeping things tidy. It doesn’t have to be immaculate, but picking up and organizing can be tremendously helpful.
Out of all the day’s events, hair and make-up are often responsible for delays. Hair and make-up often go over, so be sure to give yourself a big cushion of 30 minutes or more depending on where you will be getting it done.
If you are desiring to have bridal portraits done before the ceremony, give us enough time for this to happen. Usually 30 minutes is more than enough. So make sure you schedule your hair and make-up to be finished up to an hour or so before the ceremony. He or she can touch you up just before and this will give us enough time to get some portraits and have a cushion in case thing run past time. It will also allow for some spontaneous and photo journalistic type images with your loved ones.
Items To Bring:
Both bride and groom should think about bringing important or sentimental items such as letters, pictures, etc.. While you are getting ready it will give me some time to take some artistic images of these items with you in the background. Second item I would suggest for the brides is a beautiful hanger for the dress. It can make all the difference. Etsy has some nice options. Homemade options are charming and sweet as well. Finally, a small pretty mirror. It could be an antique or modern.
Have a smile on your face but don’t be too conscious of how you look. Sometimes when people are stressed or overwhelmed they can look miserable! LOL.. don’t worry if you are one of those people. You soon to be hubby knows you inside and out. What you and your family will appreciate most is you being your lovely self. You are marrying each other for what is inside your heart.. So don’t over think it and definitely don’t feel like you need to smile or pose every time the camera is pointed at you! Allowing yourself to be natural will allow for beautiful and memorable moments and photographs!
